It’s not uncommon for people to forget that driving is a potentially dangerous activity. For the most part, drivers make it safely from point A to point B without incident, but this isn’t always the case.
Even a momentary lapse in concentration can have catastrophic consequences on the roads. Driving distractions cause numerous accidents every day. What are some of the most dangerous driving distractions?
Cell phones
Despite stricter laws on cell phone use while driving, cell phones still rank at the top of dangerous driving distractions. It takes just a few seconds to send or read a text message, but these seconds amount to a lifetime at high speeds.
Passengers
Passengers also have the potential to become dangerous distractions. This can occur if they are playful while the driver is trying to focus, or if a heated debate ensues within the vehicle. Additionally, young children often aren’t fully aware of the dangers on the road. Drivers should monitor the mood of a child while on the road and pull over for breaks if necessary.
Vehicle accessories
Most modern vehicles are fitted with modern technology such as air conditions, heated seats, adjustable mirrors, audio centers and GPS. While these can benefit the driver, they also have the potential to be distractions. Drivers should make sure that they are seated in a comfortable position, and have everything else in order before setting off. This prevents adjustments while in motion.
You can only limit your own distractions and not those of other people. If you have been injured by a negligent driver, you may be entitled to personal injury compensation.
