How to avoid an accident in the rain

On Behalf of | Apr 5, 2022 | Auto Accidents |

Denver is a pretty wet area. In fact, the rainy months span from March to October, which means you must learn how to keep yourself and others safe while on the road.

By practicing safe driving and ensuring your vehicle is safe to drive, you can prevent accidents and avoid the injuries that may occur.

Make sure your car is safe to drive

It’s a good idea to inspect your car quickly before you hit the road. Look at the tires and ensure they are properly inflated and that the tread isn’t worn away. You should also check your headlights and windshield wipers to ensure they are operating properly, as these are invaluable systems when driving in the rain.

Don’t follow other vehicles too closely

When driving in the rain, you need to make sure you have plenty of space to stop in a hurry. Usually, this means allowing more space between you and the car in front of you. Water on the road may cause your vehicle to slip and slide if you slam on the brakes, so making sure there’s plenty of space will help you avoid an accident.

Avoid driving through standing water on the roads

While the big “splash” may seem fun to kids and even you when you drive through standing water, it can cause problems if you must brake quickly. If you don’t have a choice but to drive through standing water, be sure to take your foot off the gas and press the brake lightly a few times to help dry the rotors.

Staying safe in the rain

Unfortunately, accidents tend to increase in the rain. Learning how to drive safely in the rain will help you avoid an accident and the injuries that often accompany these situations.
