What happens if an accident leaves you permanently disabled?

An accident can change your life in a matter of seconds. This is especially true for severe car accidents or motorcycle crashes. One moment you are driving to work, heading to the grocery store or on the way to pick up your child, and the next you are in pain and your vehicle sustained serious damage. At some point, it may become obvious to you that your life will never be the same.

While the pain may subside and you may regain some of your strength, you may not be able to go back to work. Some injuries are severe to the point that they leave a Colorado victim with limited physical capabilities, permanent exhaustion and other persistent medical needs. If you are in this situation after an accident, you may be able to move forward with a disability claim.

Who gets disability benefits?

Disability benefits are a form of financial support that comes from the Social Security Administration. The intent of these benefits is to provide support for individuals who are unable to work due to a medical condition, injury or mental impairment. In order to qualify, there must be evidence that your injury or medical condition will last for at least 12 months or for the rest of your life.

Proving disability is not always easy. Even if you believe you have a valid claim and that your case is clear, the SSA can be quite picky. You will have to complete the application and provide sufficient medical documentation. This can be quite difficult, especially if you are already struggling with pain and limitations that are the result of your accident. This is why many disability applicants find it beneficial to seek help with their claims.

The recovery you deserve

Knowing what to do after an accident can be challenging. The aftermath of a serious car crash can leave you with many questions and concerns about your future. Should you seek disability benefits? Do you have grounds to file a personal injury claim? Can you do both? You can get answers to all of your questions by reaching out for experienced legal guidance as soon as possible.

You have the right to seek the full amount of recovery and support you deserve after a car accident. If you cannot return to work, you may find it beneficial to work with a legal advocate who has experience with both the disability claims process and personal injury law.
