Driving aggressively and road rage are not the same thing

Even so, they often result in the same outcome. Driving defensively or assertively can help you get to your destination safely, but when driving behaviors cross over into aggression or road rage, serious accidents can result.

If you happen to get in the way of one of these drivers, you could suffer serious injuries. Your best defense may involve knowing the signs of an aggressive driver, who could easily become a road rage driver.

Signs the person near you is an aggressive driver

The hallmark of aggressive driving is engaging in intentional behavior behind the wheel that diminishes the well-being and safety of everyone on the road. Some of those behaviors include those listed below:

  • Driving at excessive speeds
  • Running red lights and stop signs
  • Failing to yield when another driver has the right-of-way
  • Tailgating
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
  • Accelerating and corning harshly
  • Flashing lights
  • Honking the horn
  • Yelling and gesturing at other drivers

You may see other aggressive driving behaviors in addition to these, but they are some of the most commonly seen. If you see a vehicle acting in this manner, give it as wide a berth as possible. Even if you have to slow down in order to let the vehicle gain some distance, it could save your life. Aggressive drivers are an accident waiting to happen, and you don’t want to be around when their luck runs out.

Even though these driving behaviors often stem from anger, frustration or impatience, they do not necessarily reach the level of road rage that often begins with an altercation in traffic. The driver exhibiting road rage intends to cause harm to another person through criminal and violent behavior. A car just happens to be one of the weapons such a person may use to inflict that harm.

If you suffered injuries due to an aggressive driver

Even when you do your best to avoid aggressive drivers, you could still end up suffering injuries in a crash caused by one. If that happens, you do have legal options. Colorado law allows you the ability to pursue compensation for the financial losses and other damages you incurred in connection with the crash. That driver’s behaviors prior to the accident will more than likely play a pivotal role in establishing that your injuries resulted from that person’s actions.
