What if your dentist pulls the wrong tooth?

On Behalf of | Jun 12, 2024 | Dental Injuries And Malpractice |

One study that looked at wrong tooth extraction issues claimed that the prevalence found was roughly 21.1%. This means that a dentist pulls the wrong tooth in roughly one out of every five cases.

This can be a very serious mistake and an example of dental malpractice. It could lead to infection. It will almost certainly lead to more medical bills, as the original extraction still needs to be made. Plus, the wrongly-extracted tooth may have to be replaced, which could mean getting an implant. All of this is very expensive, it takes time, and it can lead to discomfort or even pain and suffering.

Why does it happen?

There are numerous reasons why the dentist may pull the wrong tooth. Miscommunication issues clocked in at 31.6% of cases, making them the most common. Maybe the dentist was simply told to pull the wrong tooth by the support team or the paperwork got mixed up.

Next, in 28.9% of the cases, the dentist was simply overworked and exhausted. They were burned out and they made an honest mistake. For instance, the dentist may have pulled multiple teeth on the same day, and mental fatigue caused a mistake near the end.

Finally, another 28.9% of cases involved an inadequate referral. The dental surgeon in question may not have been the patient’s primary care provider. They were referred out for tooth extraction, but the person they were referred to wasn’t qualified or wasn’t able to do the job well.

What options do you have?

If your dentist has pulled the wrong tooth, perhaps for one of the reasons noted above, it could be an example of dental malpractice. Take the time to carefully look into your legal options as you pursue compensation.
