How do different weather patterns impact crash risks?

A change in weather has a way to turn what would otherwise be a normal drive into a potentially deadly one. Some of the more dangerous conditions that motorists may have to drive in include dust, fog, snow, ice and rain. We experience some of all of these here in Denver. This may explain why there seems to be an uptick in car accidents when the weather is poor outside.

If there’s one thing that rain, dust, snow, fog and ice all have in common, it’s that they all affect a motorist’s visibility.

Many drivers struggle with being able to see things when there’s thick fog outside the most. This weather phenomenon often comes in patches. It’s often hard to anticipate. A motorist may easily find oneself having to pull off to the side of the road because they’re unable to see anything ahead of them no matter whether they turn on their headlights or slow their speed. Motorists run the risk of having a crash in instances such as this.

Another weather risk that many motorists don’t prepare enough for is rain. It’s not uncommon for a driver to pass from an area that was relatively clear into another one that is experiencing a downpour. The same effect can happen with snow.

Rain is particularly dangerous. This is especially the case when it initially starts falling and oil and water intermix. It can give way to slippery roadways. This can make it hard for drivers to gain traction and thus cause them to lose control of their vehicles.

The snow that melts can refreeze as ice. A motorist can experience reduced traction if they come upon this. What’s even worse is if black ice forms on the roadway. A driver operating their car may not realize that they’ve come upon this until it’s too late and there’s very little that they can do to regain control of their vehicle and avoid a crash.

Sun glare, wind and hot weather can all also make it hard for motorists to operate their cars safely.

The combination of these different factors can lead to a driver to become an unwilling participant in a serious crash. An attorney can review the details surrounding your Denver crash and let you know if you might qualify to file suit against the motorist that struck and injured you.
