Driving at night isn’t the same as driving during the day

On Behalf of | Dec 13, 2019 | Uncategorized |

The world doesn’t change at night, but your ability to see it does. Even in well-lit areas, the visibility is not the same as it would be with the sun lighting up everything. The fact of the matter is that accidents are three times more likely to occur at night than during the day.

For drivers, this means adjusting the way you drive in order to get to your destination safely. This is especially important during this time of year when the sun goes down so much earlier. If you are like many others here in the Denver area, you drive to work in the dark and come home in the dark during the shorter days of winter. Adding holiday shopping and travel into the mix only increases the potential for accidents.

Tips to stay safe while driving in the dark

Adjusting your driving habits to account for lower visibility at night doesn’t mean changing the way you drive completely. It simply means doing more of what you would do during the day, and a little extra. The following are recommendations in order to increase your safety while driving at night:

  • Tailgating the vehicle in front of you isn’t a good idea during the day, but it’s an even worse idea at night since the lower visibility slows your reaction time. In addition, your headlights could impede the vision of the vehicle in front of you and/or make that driver more nervous and prone to overreact, which could cause an accident.
  • Keep watching for lights and movement, and keep checking your mirrors. Other vehicles, people and animals are harder to see at night, and they could dart out in front of you without warning, so the more time you have to react, the better.
  • Keep your headlights clean and make sure to use them from dusk until dawn. The more light you have to rely on, the better your chances of seeing something sooner in order to react with more control.
  • You are naturally more tired at night, so it’s important to make sure you stay awake and alert. If you are too tired to drive safely, you present the same danger to yourself and others as a drunk driver does, so make sure you aren’t too drowsy to drive.

Following the above tips could help you get home safely at the end of your day. More than likely, you already subscribe to these tips, but that doesn’t mean everyone else does, too. If you end up in an accident involving a driver who failed to account for the darkness in some manner, you may suffer serious injuries.

Fortunately, you may have the opportunity to pursue the compensation you deserve by proving the other driver drove negligently or recklessly, which caused your injuries.
