How technology is affecting distracted drivers

On Behalf of | Nov 20, 2019 | Auto Accidents |

Many Colorado drivers understand the responsibility they take on when they get behind the wheel. They realize that they have the responsibility to drive in a safe manner and in harmony with the law. Still, people around the country are dying or getting injured because some drivers choose to drive distracted.

For some drivers, the distraction comes from the technologies that are included in their vehicle, like dashboard touchscreens. It is unlikely that automobile manufacturers are going to remove these technologies from their vehicles because they are popular with consumers.

One of the more widely recognized forms of distraction comes from driving while using a cellphone. Just about every driver understands how dangerous driving can be while texting, checking social media or talking on a cell phone without using a hands-free device. Studies show that up to 50% of people admit to texting or checking social media while driving. Up to 60% of people admit to using their cellphone while driving. It seems that even laws and stiff penalties are not enough to prevent people from driving while distracted.

Automobile manufacturers have been studying the use of artificial intelligence and visual intelligence to create warning systems that tell drivers when they are engaged in distracting activities. By monitoring the activity inside the vehicle, these AI systems should be able to provide drivers with visual, audible and sensory warnings that tell them they are engaging in activities that could lead to car accidents.

Some drivers may ignore alarms produced by their vehicles and continue to drive while distracted. If this happens and the result is an accident, the distracted driver may be deemed negligent. The victim of the accident may want to work with a personal injury attorney, who may be able to discuss the case with the client, talk to insurance companies, gather information about medical bills and then use this information to help the client get compensation for their injuries.
