Why do most motorcycle accidents happen?

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2019 | Uncategorized |

Many people choose to ride motorcycles because they enjoy the freedom of the open road and the sense of adventure they get when they are on the bike. While bikers share the same rights as drivers of other types of vehicles, other Colorado drivers don’t always understand this. In fact, the road can be a very dangerous place for bikers.

Because bikers are largely unprotected against the impact of a crash with another vehicle, a motorcycle accident can result in grave injuries or even death. It is the responsibility of each driver to know how to safely share the road with motorbikes and how to avoid accidents. Many of these types of motor vehicle collisions are preventable with caution and attentive driving.

What causes these types of accidents?

In comparison with other types of accidents, motorcycle crashes are five times more likely to result in death and ten times more likely to result in injuries. Similar to other types of accidents, motorcycle collisions are often the result of human error and other preventable factors. Some of the most common reasons for these crashes include:

  • Speeding – High rates of speed make it more likely that an accident will occur, and it can make it difficult for a driver to avoid a hazard. Speed significantly increases the severity of a collision with a motorcycle.
  • Drunk or distracted driving – When a driver is not in full control of his or her faculties or is not attentive to what is happening on the road, it makes it much more likely that an accident will occur.
  • Hazards in the road – When there is something in the road, it is difficult for a motorcycle to avoid it because sudden changes in direction can lead to skidding and losing control of the bike.

Of course, bikers also have the responsibility of driving carefully and avoiding reckless behavior. When both bikers and drivers are striving to safely share space and arrive at their destinations without incident, the road will be a much safer place for everyone.

The rights of victims

If you are a victim of a motorcycle accident or a collision caused by a negligent driver, you have rights. You could be entitled to compensation, which you may be able to pursue through a personal injury claimed filed against the liable party. Determining liability and identifying the responsible party is not always easy, but an evaluation of your case can help you understand your legal options.
