Colorado can learn from large medical malpractice award

| Jan 24, 2014 | Uncategorized |

The husband of a woman who died after experiencing liver complications has won a lawsuit. He filed a medical malpractice suit against the surgeon who treated her. Apparently, complications occurred after the surgeon removed her gallbladder and placed staples in the wrong locations. These errors are a common cause of medical malpractice suits filed in Colorado.

The woman had several health complications and was being housed at a nursing home. It was when her gallbladder was removed in 2010 that things started to decline. Eventually, her liver wasn’t functioning properly, and she ended up suffering from jaundice. She was admitted to the hospital where it was revealed that the movement of bile from her liver was being obstructed by surgical staples. Moreover, the staples were located on both hepatic ducts instead of the appropriate location on the cystic duct.

A surgeon attempted to correct the issue by removing the staples, but the woman was suffering from end-stage liver disease. The woman suffered even more when she was diagnosed with having Lou Gehrig’s disease. In the courtroom, the jury determined that the surgeon was responsible for the woman’s liver disease and awarded her husband $776,000.

Suffering from a serious health condition is a challenging experience for patients and their families. It’s even more stressful when the health condition was caused by a trusted medical professional. Surgical errors are usually costly mistakes that can cause patients a great deal of pain and suffering and even death. Colorado families who have lost a loved one due to negligence have the right to pursue medical malpractice claims against the treating physician and/or medical facility to recover damages.
