Medical negligence alleged in case involving infant

A doctor is facing ramifications after being accused of failing to provide adequate care to a newborn baby. According to reports, the doctor left in the middle of her shift while the baby was under her care, without informing other staff members of her whereabouts. During her absence, the baby was having difficulty breathing and it was later discovered that he was suffering from pulmonary hypertension. The Medical Board has filed reports claiming medical negligence, which has been a continuous issue in Colorado and elsewhere.

In the early part of the afternoon, a chest X-ray was performed on the baby and he was placed on a ventilator for breathing. When results of the X-ray came back, the physician left the site to run errands while another doctor was covering for her without the staff's knowledge. A nurse on duty made unsuccessful attempts to contact the physician. Since the other doctor on duty was only instructed to look over the X-ray, staff members performed additional tests on the infant which revealed a serious breathing condition.

The baby was transferred to another medical facility for treatment of hypoxemic respiratory failure and pulmonary hypertension. The baby also suffered several brain injuries that were reportedly due to untimely treatment. The Medical Board accused the doctor of being incompetent and negligent and further stated that she did not provide care within a reasonable time frame.

In this medical negligence case, the Medical Board is requesting for the physician's license to be suspended or even revoked. She may also be placed on probation where she will be banned from having physician assistants under her supervision. Under Colorado law, the parents of infants who have suffered injuries due to negligence retain the right to pursue medical malpractice claims against the attending physician and/or medical facility.
